Scudder Demolition successfully secured the design, demolition and enabling works package at Station Hill as part of the ongoing redevelopment of Reading’s main train station.
Scudder has now finished the final elements of the demolition and enabling works at Station Hill, Reading, as part of the on-going development of Reading train station.
The team have completed a number of key milestones on this 33-week project including demolition of the 18-storey Western Tower, Friars Walk Shopping Centre and the Mecca Bingo hall, as well as delivering structural modifications to Xaffinity House which remained operational throughout our works. Additionally, we removed a bridge over Garrard Street whilst the traffic underneath remained live.
In demolishing the Western Tower, we implemented a top-down deconstruction method, requiring the use of a tower crane for the first stage, before completing the works with a long reach machine. This helped to mitigate a number of risks associated with removing a large structure, within an urban environment, in a short time frame.
Furthermore, as part of our methodology we implemented a number of innovative solutions, including the installation of a timber crash deck and associated temporary works on the pedestrian bridge to maintain the minimum height for vehicles passing underneath.
Key to this project has been overcoming the logistical challenges of working adjacent to a live rail environment and in close proximity to the busy town centre. Traffic management and sequencing plans ensured that disruption to the public was minimal and where necessary we worked at night so that the station could continue to run at full capacity.
As well as developing a 3D model of the scheme to support our planning and management of the works, CGIs were a valuable communication tool used to regularly inform the general public and residents’ associations of our planned works.
Both ION Environmental and Careys Civil Engineering have also been involved on this contract. ION delivered all asbestos related works, whilst Careys Civil Engineering are finalising construction of a temporary events space, close to the entrance of the station.
I would like to thank Scudder Demolition for their hard work at Station Hill. The team have proven to be outstandingly helpful in all they have done, making my job as Estate Manager a lot easier!
