ION Environmental is delivering asbestos removal oversight of works being undertaken at Selfridges' flagship store on Oxford Street, London. The store is undergoing a major redevelopment, combining multiple buildings and realigning floors to increase available retail space throughout the store. ION is working alongside Carey Group company, Scudder Demolition, who are undertaking a major package of works for the project, with ION in attendance to prevent exposure to any undetected asbestos containing materials.

Due to the complexity of the building and the considerable alterations which have been carried out over the course of its history, records regarding the structural makeup were limited when works began. Information presented to Scudder indicated a significant likelihood of the presence of asbestos within the building, and we were consequently tasked with providing protective measures to ensure the personal safety of both the Scudder team and customers using the store.

Having delivered multiple projects in live environments our client was confident in our ability to minimise impact upon their store operations and to maintain their ability to deliver a premium customer experience.

Multiple measures were put in place to support this goal including overnight working to quarantine and remove asbestos which had been detected during the project. Whenever asbestos containing materials were identified we presented our client with multiple options to remove the impact to the wider works and keep the programme progressing efficiently.

With our engagement our client benefitted from exceptional risk management and cost certainty, maintaining their programme of works and ensuring safety for site operatives.
