Q&A's

Our culture is really quite an honest, refreshing kind of culture. In today's world, there's a big tendency to demean the role of Health and Safety, but as part of the Carey Group, ION is really focused on the importance of health and safety; even more so because of the highly regulated nature of our business.

Having worked on numerous projects over my career, I know that the construction industry isn't always great when it comes to Health and Safety, so working for a company that really stresses the importance of it is really fantastic. I've never known of a company that invests so much in their health and safety, so the teams and our clients really feel safe in what they're doing.

As account manager for retail and small works, I’m in charge of our relationship with Sainsbury's Supermarkets, who are a key customer for us. Unlike working in the residential sector, where you have a longer window of opportunity to remove asbestos, retail stores want us gone as soon as possible! Some Sainsburys stores are open 24 hours a day, and the last thing a shopper wants to see is our team in hazmat suits.

The only way around this is to undertake extensive planning before we get to site. If a store opens at 6am, we’ll plan to be off site by 4. Wherever possible, we do our works out of hours, or when there are the least amount of people present. We deploy extensive segregation of our works, and work closely with a store manager to minimise disruption to operations.

It’s not really a single project, but our work with Sainsbury’s has got to be at the top of my list. We’re in the fifth year of working with them, we’ve worked on more than 200 stores across the UK, and in that time we’ve had absolutely no spillages, leakages or incidents. There’s been a terrific amount of hard work from the team; a lot of out of hours and weekend working, but it’s really paid off in the repeat work we win from the client and the longevity of our relationship with them.
