Greg was appointed as Managing Director of Careys New Homes in 2013, bringing over 25 years' construction and house building experience in the UK and overseas. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and prior to joining Careys New Homes held the role of Managing Director for a number of well-known national house builders including Barratt Homes and Crest Nicholson.
Greg has overall responsibility for Careys New Homes' operations, ensuring the smooth running of the housing business, beginning with land acquisition, the subsequent building of new homes to an excellent standard and quality and overseeing the successful customer buying process.
I’ve been with Careys for four years and I can honestly say that it’s a totally different feel to any other company I’ve ever worked for. Big house builders are often solely focused on financial targets – the number of houses constructed and sold, and reporting that to the shareholders in the best possible light. Careys New Homes is much more about making sure we get the right homes, in the right locations and that our customers really have a home to be proud of.
We encourage a very open culture where no one is frightened to come forward with suggestions and ideas which has played a key part in building the strong team.
Careys New Homes is totally different to the other Group companies in that we’re both client and developer. We find the land, develop the land and then deliver homes we’re proud of. We only purchase sites in premier locations and we won’t build with consortiums. We provide a higher quality specification in our homes that always challenges our competitors.
The journey for our customer starts with their very first piece of information which involves Careys New Homes and lasts for two years after handover. When a customer is looking to reserve a home, we’re totally transparent and make sure that customers have complete understanding of what they’re buying and we provide them with regular updates regarding the construction of their new home.
Our industry is going to have to wake up to the skills shortage – there’s enormous competition to get skilled tradespeople. I think some of the bigger firms are going to have to look at modular building to improve quality. The government is talking about building 200,000 homes a year – every government tinkers with the planning system, but no government has delivered anywhere near that many houses for as long as I’ve been in the industry.
The Vale at Bushey because that was quite a challenging project. From the outside, it looks like a two-storey building, but because of the levels and the basement, the homes are up to four or five storeys – really great spaces to live in.
