At Careys, we're passionate about successfully overcoming complex project challenges. Our commitment to safety, efficiency and quality is achieved through the continuous efforts from our employees. This week we caught up with Senior Engineer - Javad, who shared his responsibilities, favourite project and career highlights with us.

Joining Careys

I joined Careys in June 2013 as a freelance site engineer on the Jack Crawford House Waste Transfer Station project in Sunderland. In January 2014 I was offered a permanent role on The Grande project – an eight-storey commercial block in Aberdeen.

My roles and responsibilities

Since starting Ferrybridge Multifuel 2 Power Station, I have been responsible for:

  • All quality aspects of the project
  • Developing a site-specific quality plan
  • Inspection Test Plans (ITPs)
  • Quality monitoring
  • Completing quality assurance handover packs
  • Operation and maintenance manuals

In addition to above, at my current site, Woodsmith Mine - the UK’s first large-scale mining operation in decades, I’m the document controller and work closely with Project Managers to assist them with a variety of their day to day tasks.

What I enjoy most about my role

It is a challenging and demanding role. I enjoy it most when we complete handovers above client expectations and within the agreed timescale.

My favourite project to date

Every project that I have been involved in is part of me.

However, I feel most attached to Woodsmith Mine, as I have never worked on this kind of project, especially knowing that it is one of the most complex projects we are delivering.

Summarising the culture at Careys in three words

Better Every Day

Better Every Day for me means that we are open to challenge, and that we look for innovation within the industry to improve the way we work. As part of the Carey Way – our values and work ethic - we learn from our mistakes, we look after each other, respect one another, deliver excellent projects and never compromise on quality or safety.

My advice to anyone looking to pursue a similar career

Construction is an adventurous, wonderful and challenging world. You’ll be part of a team to overcome a variety of encounters, making the impossible possible. The joy is not comparable to anything else.
