Marischal Square was a new 5,500m2 mixed-use development in the city centre of Aberdeen, which formed a key part of the town’s regeneration. Careys Civil Engineering's scope included excavating 20,000m3 of material prior to constructing the reinforced concrete sub and superstructure, and installing the sites utilities and drainage. Our team constructed six cores with two levels below ground and three, six, and eight storeys above ground.

To facilitate a faster programme for construction of the cores, our methodology involved both slipform and jumpform techniques, as well as deploying our own tower cranes. In completing the basement works, a number of logistical constraints were overcome within the tight site footprint, including working in restricted areas close to the 300m sheet pile perimeter wall and the temporary supporting props.

Health and safety was paramount in the confined space and we implemented a number of initiatives to improve practices at the site. One of these included a secondary safety measure when lifting concrete. As we lifted pre-cast concrete into position, a collar chain of suitable capacity was passed underneath the precast element and connected to the chain sling hooks. Should the precast lifting anchor fail, the collar chain held the load and prevented serious injuries.
