Portswood Transport Depot

Project Overview

Covering 20,000m2 the site consisted of large steel frame workshops and depots, brick buildings, underground fuel tanks and extensive hard standings. Initial works involved the removal of asbestos concrete roofs and soft stripping of the complex. A stage-by-stage demolition of the main structures took place, using Kamatzu 350 and 30tn Hitachi excavators, with pulverisers and shears to dismantle the extensive steelwork. Before major excavation of the ground slabs and other sub-surface areas could proceed, several redundant underground fuel and oil tanks needed to be completely emptied and made safe. These were then lifted and broken up systematically, again for recycling.
